Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
